This Osaka Style Okonomiyaki is easy, cheap and quick to make at home. An authentic simple Japanese recipe, trialled and tested! The sweet and umami flavour of Okonomiyaki Sauce makes it a real soul food. This is a great meal to share with friends, you can simply double or triple the recipe to make more Okonomiyaki pancakes!

  • 1/2 cup of flour
  • 1/4 cup of dashi (or stock, I find fish stock works perfect)
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 and 1/2 cup of diced cabbage
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp Okonomiyaki Sauce (お好み焼きソース)
  • 2 tsp mayonaise
  • 1/2 spring onion (finely sliced)

Mix the egg and cabbage together in a large bowl

Mix the flour and baking powder to the cabbage mixture

Add the dashi / stock to the mixture

Heat up the oil in a deep frying pan, when it's hot add the mixture to the pan. Make sure it's not completely flat, you want the mixture to be in a thick circle (about 1-2cm thick)

Put a lid over the pan and cook on a low heat until the bottom of the pancake is golden brown (normally around 5-10 minutes)

Flip the pancake and cook until the other side is gold brown (normally 5-10 minutes)

Serve with Okonomiyaki Sauce spread over the pancake and mayonaise drawn in a spiral and pulled in lines to the edges to create a web pattern

Scatter the spring onion on top and enjoy!
